| Gerard Valcin |
Gerard Valcin was born on July 10,1927 in Port-au-Prince, Haiti. He worked as a tile layer for several years. In 1959 he took a sample of his work to the Centre d'Art. He received a warm reception from Dewitt Peters, an American artist and founder of the Centre d'Art. Gerard later devoted himself to painting fulltime. Valcin was also a voodoo priest and he translated a great deal of his religious convictions onto the canvas. He developed a style that is so original that his work can be easily identified. His paintings are filled with bright colors and voodoo symbolism. It is said that his paintings are so bright that they resemble enamels. Gerard died a horrible death in the street of Haiti in May 15, 1988. His works are included in the permanent collections of the Musee d'Art Haitien du College Saint Pierre in Port-au-Prince, the Milwaukee Museum of Art, and the Waterloo Museum of Art in Iowa. His paintings are normally sold in Sotheby's, Christie's and other major auction houses.
